Next Class Will Be
In Founders Chapel.
Midterm Is Soon.

Sunday, October 2, 2011

Dear Class:

Remember that we have class in Founders Chapel on 4 October. Also you should have started working on the study questions for the midterm. Prepare all of the essays, but I will only be asking you to answer one of them. Preparing all the essays will help you study for the objective questions as well.

Take a moment to read the new essay on the Tudor HOME page, "The Pleasures and the Perils of Forreine Travell."

Of Book Reviews, a Book Quiz,
and Henry VII

Sunday, September 18, 2011

Dear Class:

Several announcements for you.

First, the book reviews have been graded and the grades have been posted on Blackboard. Let me say, you have done a good job on the book reviews. You have expressed some good reactions and assessments of the books. I appreciate your hard work and the good writing.

Second, there is the quiz on The Wives of Henry VIII when we start class on Tuesday.

Third, a couple of new essays concerning Henry VII have been posted on our Tudor-Stuart class website. Check them out. You never can tell if I might not ask a question or two on the midterm based on the information they contain. Otherwise, see you on Tuesday.

Best,

Ron Fritze

Dear Class:

Remember that your first book review is due on Tuesday 13 September. We also start class at 1:30 since I have to be in the interview with the job candidate. Don’t forget, next week, 20 September, is the quiz on Antonia Fraser’s Wives of Henry VIII. I think you will enjoy the book. Don’t get behind on your reading.

New Research Changes Viewpoint
On Bosworth Field.

Monday, September 5, 2011

Class:

Please check out this link for an up-to-date story on the location of the Battle of Bosworth Field:  arrow

Ann Marie Lang discovered this link and shared it with me. You will note that the location switched sides of the river. Note also that they show the map I use in my powerpoint, but it is wrong. This is a good example of how new research can significantly change what we know or think we know. Prior to this new information, historians were not very certain as to how the troop formations were arranged on the battlefield. Now archaeology has revealed that we did not have the location of the battlefield right either! We are still pretty sure it took place on 22 August 1485 and that Henry VII and Richard III were the rival generals.

If you come across a website or story that might be of interest to this class, be sure to let me know. Meanwhile, be on the lookout for a new essay on Henry VII and the pretenders appearing soon on the Corndancer website for this class.

First Book Review Is Due Soon.

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Class:

By now you should be settling on the book for your first book review. If you need some guidance picking a book, let me know. I will be glad to make some suggestions. If you have found a book that you like, send an e-mail to let me know what you picked. If you want to try something that is not on the brief bibliography appended to the first book review guidelines, you will need to get my approval. Remember, the due date is: 13 September.

Have fun reading and learning,

Ron Fritze

the tudor rose Each weekend during the semester, Dr. Fritze will post notes to the class on this page.  The notes will answer questions raised during lectures, address semester timetables and student concerns, and occasionally provide an interesting digression into people and events related to Tudor and Stuart Britain.  Students are expected to check this page at least once a week.
