Class Visitations.

Level Three students, I was impressed with your computer skills today. You are all computer literate, which means that you have good computer skills. I hope that you have success in contacting the professors this week.

Asking Permission.

When you telephone the professors or visit them in their offices, you will use a formal tone (style) to ask for permission to visit their classes. Here's a possible dialogue between you and a professor. Notice how you identify yourself and ask for permission to visit the class.

Professor: Hello. This is Professor Jones.

Student: Hello, Professor Jones. This is Freddie Bowles. I am an international student in the Intensive English Program, and one of my class projects is to visit a General Education class.

Professor: I see.

Student: I would like to ask permission to visit your class on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 in BBA 215.

Professor: That would be great. I look forward to seeing you there.

Student: Ok. Thank you very much. I'll see you then. Bye.

Professor: Bye.

Video Quiz.

On Friday, January 24, you will have a short quiz on the video that we watched in class last week: Skills for College Success. This video is in the Language Lab so that you can watch it again this week if you need to. In order to prepare for the quiz, study the handout that I gave you in class.

The Novel Project.

For the Novel Project, you will choose a fictional novel to read by a contemporary American writer. This week you will read several book reviews by former students to give you some suggestions about whom to read. At the end of the week, we will go to the library and learn how to find books using the computerized card catalogue. Popular writers include John Grisham (from Arkansas), Danielle Steele, and Anne Rice. You will have the entire semester to read this book and four written assignments to complete.
