Reading Newspapers.

NOTE FROM MRS. BOWLES: Irmina Fabricio, graduate student in Spanish at the University of Central Arkansas and English language student in Level Three Academic Classroom Skills, writes about her experience for an assignment that involved reading the local newspaper, the Log Cabin Democrat.

Reading newspapers is always interesting, but reading in another language, from my point of view, is a very exciting process. I believe that reading news, ads, magazines, or other materials in English helps us to improve our language skills.

Usually when I read in English, I read the whole article and try to understand the main idea. Then I look up the words that I don't know in the dictionary. After that, I read the whole article again. In that way, I always understand everything and I feel happy because I can know what's happening.

I really enjoyed this particular homework while I was doing it. I learned some new words for me, like figs, rip, outage, slide, helmet, encore and others. Also I found out about current news in our city Conway, such as a new design for streets and sidewalks in Conway's downtown. I really agree with this idea. I think that the downtown's view will be more beautiful than now.

In conclusion, reading the newspaper was a good experience because it helped me to learn the language and improve my reading skills.
