GOALS OF THE COURSE: Intensive practice in speaking and writing idiomatic German.

 

POLICIES:   Attendance is essential if you hope to keep up and not fall hopelessly behind. After your first FOUR absences, I reserve the right to drop your final grade average by five points for each subsequent absence. After EIGHT unexcused absences, I reserve the right to drop you from the course for non-attendance.

 

FINAL GRADE: The written essay assignments count a total of 60%, the class participation evaluation counts 20%, and the two oral interviews count a total of 20%.

 

SOME POINTS ON PREPARING EACH LESSON:        Listen and read for general comprehension of the German. Do not try to translate right offhand. Look up words at convenient breaks. Continuity of listening and/or reading is important, especially the first time through.

 

Review, constant review, is essential and consists of re-doing each of the above steps.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION (from Undergraduate Bulletin, p. 145)

 

“Students who have studied a foreign language in which they are not native speakers, and have not previously received undergraduate credit in that language at a college or university, may receive credit by examination. Such credit is limited to a maximum of six hours in a language or twelve hours within the department and is granted by fulfilling the following criteria:

1.        Achievement of a satisfactory score on a proficiency examination administered by the Department of Foreign Languages.

2.        Satisfactory completion, with a minimum grade of “B”, of the next sequential foreign language course above the level for which credit is to be awarded.”
