Text: College Physics, Wilson and Buffa, 5e

The objective of
this course is to provide a fairly detailed overview of the field of physics to
students majoring in science. In this
second semester we will be covering waves, sound, electricity, magnetism, and
optics (Chapters 13-25). Unless
specifically stated otherwise you are responsible for all the material in those
chapters, even if not specifically presented in class, as well as any
additional material presented. Note that this class is a continuation of
College Physics 1 and as such you are also expected to have a working knowledge
of the material presented in that course.
You are expected to have read ahead of time the material that will be
discussed in class. Your grade in this
class will be based on labs, four exams, and the final.
Problem solving is
an important part of this course, and as such, 8 to 12 problems will be
assigned for each chapter. It will be
important for you to work these problems in order to increase your
problem-solving skills, to help you understand the material, and to prepare you
to work exam problems. Exams will typically consist of multiple choice and some
short answer questions as well as problems. It will be helpful for you to work
through the multiple choice and conceptual questions at the end of each chapter
in addition to the problems specifically assigned. Occasionally a pop quiz may be given. Quiz points will be treated as bonus points. Quizzes cannot be made up under any
circumstances.
In calculating your grade the final exam will be doubled and the lowest
"hour" exam will be dropped.
Makeup exams will be given at my discretion only for unusual
circumstances, and only if you have notified me in a timely manner. If you miss an exam for a university
sponsored activity, I must have written notice from the sponsor/coach/advisor
at least one week prior to the absence in order for me to consider
whether or not a makeup exam will be given. Your lowest lab grade will also be
dropped and therefore there are no
makeup labs. The breakdown of how
the labs and exams contribute to your grade is presented below.

Other Policies
Cheating is grounds for being withdrawn failing from this
course.
Cell phones and other such communication devices are to be
turned off when you are in class. They
are not to be used as calculators or clocks.
In other words, put them away. I
don't want to see them or hear them.
This same policy applies to lab.
Attendance: You are expected to attend class and lab. Attendance may or may not be taken. However, after the third absence from lab
you will be dropped from the course with a WF unless you have discussed these
absences with me. If you do feel that
you need to drop this course, I would appreciate being informed. Friday, March 19 is the last day to drop
with no penalty.
Bonus points may
be given for various and sundry things such as attendance (5 points). Bonus points will not be awarded when you
are late or leave early. For each 100
bonus points accumulated, 1% is added to your final grade (e.g. 140 BP = 1.4%).
Students should familiarize
themselves with the policies in the Student Handbook especially the Academic
Policies and the Sexual Harassment Policy.
The University of Central
Arkansas adheres to the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities
Act. If you need an accommodation under
this act due to a disability, contact the UCA office of Disability Services at
450-3135.
Skills
Skills
from College Physics 1 needed to successfully complete College Physics 2
include:
Problem
solving with organized, logical presentation of solutions.
Graphical
representation of data.
Handling
of significant figures.
Proper
use of unit.
Vector
addition.
Proper
methods of measuring.
Review
content from chapters 1-12 by studying the chapter summaries. You might want to consolidate the formulas
on a single page (8 x 11, both sides) that you can refer back to when
necessary.
Study Aids
Planet Psi is the website
(brought online 8/21/03) for my classes.
To find Planet Psi, journey to http://www.corndancer.com and click on
Planet Vox where you will find the Planet Psi icon. You will find a copy of this syllabus as well as other
information, that I hope you will take time to investigate. Please visit this site often, since it will
change as the semester progresses.
(Hopefully better than last semester.)
The website for the text
book www.prenhall.com/wilson
will also provide you with chapter objectives, and practice problems with
immediate feedback, as well as some interesting application articles and links
to other helpful sites.
I hope that you will take
advantage of these resources.
