Jazmin Carranza T O P I C : Loudly Interrupts ClassJazmin Poses the Question. . . .September 11, 2007What can I do about a 7th grade student who loudly interrupts class several times a period? This student just moved to the United States from a country in which its people use forceful voices. He hardly knows any English, so it makes it difficult to communicate with him. Anthony Halter answers. . . .September 14, 2007After having a face-to-face discussion with him to explain the rules, I would tell him EVERYTIME he spoke out that I answer questions and field comments from students that raise their hands. My mentor teacher is very strict about classroom procedures and the students love her. They all seem to like the structure because she enforces the rules for everyone, everytime. Adam Bumstead answers. . . .October 22, 2007I have a student who is also a seventh grader that has the same problem. However, he feels that every comment he makes is okay and appropriate. He constantly interrupts me and ridicules other students when they are in trouble. We have given him plenty of warnings, but now we have made some limitations. He can only have one talk out of turn a class, and then he gets a lunch detention. To keep him from blurting out, we have made him start counting to ten before he raises his hand to make a comment. Also we had a pack meeting with him to make sure he understands that it is hurtful to make fun of people, especially around their peers. These changes have been stressful, but he is making progress. The most important thing is that we are always consistent with how we deal with him. That is the key!
