A Responsibility and a Delight.
Dear students,
Welcome, summer students, to your own public website. The knowledge you gain about language acquisition this summer will be shared with our readers on the World Wide Web! What a responsibility. What a delight.
The Language Development website is the contact point to help inform, encourage, and motivate you to absorb, contemplate, and question the unique human phenomenon of speech.
Humans are born to talk.
We learn to talk by talking.
Every action an infant performs sets the stage for language. Jean Piaget remarked that he believed the most creative period of human life was between birth and eighteen months. As I continue to explore the relationship between cognition and language development, I’m beginning to agree.
When you finish our class in early summer, I think you, too, will have an appreciation of the challenges and successes of our species as we first join, then seek to master the language communities of our respective cultures.
Enjoy the class!
