Week Three.
What It Means to Be a Master.
Good evening, teacher candidates,
I hope your weekend contained a bit of relaxation injected into the demands of summer classes. I was in Conway for a brief 24 hours of packing and "home beautification." Our son Marcus accompanied me to help out with the moving. It was our last weekend together at "Cricket Song," the name of our cottage in Old Conway. It was a fine reunion with father, mother, son, and two dogs, Holly and Buck — but oh, what a lot of work of a different sort!
Now it's back to business. Time to shift from homemaker to teacher. I spent some hours in discussion and reflection with my husband about teaching, so tomorrow we will address the idea of professionalism and what it means to be a master teacher.
This week we will follow the course outline with an activity on Monday related to the case studies in Chapters Four and Five. You will also receive your second article for the threaded discussion. For this go around, I will guide you through the article in an effort to assist you in comprehending text. I understand that worksheets are helpful, but they really do not aid in developing your own critical thinking skills. At this level, more global questions are required.
I will collect the article critiques on Monday and the personal responses on Tuesday. You may also turn the responses in on Monday as originally assigned. Read Chapter Six for Tuesday and be prepared to discuss the questions on page 230. We will follow up with an analysis of the case studies on Wednesday. Read Chapter Seven for Thursday and be prepared to discuss the questions on page 275.
At the same time, you should be looking for your second journal article to critique. Don't forget that you can begin to post your responses to the second article on Tuesday. The deadline for the posting is Thursday. We have not discussed my policy on late homework because I simply did not think it would be an issue at this level. However, for each day that an assignment is late, you loose 10% of the total grade, so if you are a day late for the threaded discussion, for example, you lose one point. That leaves you 9/10 points before I even assign a grade.
You are about to enter a world of where punctuality and professionalism is demanded. Now is the time to practice these attributes!
