II. Relationship to Knowledge Base:
Students will recognize the broad definition of diversity as it relates to the public education classroom and the implications of teaching for success to students with diverse backgrounds. Students will also develop an understanding of the definition, framework, and implementation of multicultural education and its relationship to the social and political context of a multicultural society.
III. Goals:
Upon completion of this course, students will be cognizant of how schools and teachers view diversity and their assumptions of what constitutes diversity, the genesis and growth of multicultural education, and the practice of multicultural education in the contemporary classroom.
IV. Competencies:
Students will:
1. Recognize the validity of case study research.
2. Develop a working vocabulary as it relates to diversity.
3. Discuss attitudes of racism and discrimination and their relationship to student achievement.
4. Understand the relationship of culture, identity, and learning.
5. Discuss the role of multicultural education and school reform and its implications for teachers, schools, and families.
6. Recognize the reality of multicultural education in today's classroom.
7. Articulate their own frame of reference regarding multicultural education and how they will adjust their teaching methods to accommodate diversity in the classroom.
8. Read, review, and interpret articles relating to MCE.
V. Content:
1. Approaches and definitions of multicultural education.
2. A conceptual framework of multicultural education in a sociopolitical context.
3. Implications of diversity for teaching and learning in a multicultural society.
VI. Evaluation:
1. Research journal article critiques.
You will be asked to read and summarize three research articles related to course topics of interest to you. You must select research articles from peer reviewed, professional journals. The "Notes" at the end of each chapter offer several points of reference. You will include a printed version of the article along with the summary.
(10 points each)
2. Literature discussion group.
The class will be divided into small groups where each group will read a piece of assigned literature addressing issues of cultural diversity. Students will post a response to their selection once a week. By Thursday of each week, you will post a personal response to the week's reading to the discussion board. Postings will be evaluated and points awarded on a weekly basis by judging the quality of responses. Remember, the quality of the entire discussion will be influenced by how much you have prepared in advance before posting your response. My expectation is that you will post contributions that further the thinking of classmates. Simply agreeing or disagreeing with class members will not stimulate deeper thinking and thus will not be given as much "credit or points" for participation.
(10 points each week beginning the second week for a total of 40 points)
3. Course readings.
There will be daily reading assignments. By Monday of each week, you will write a personal response to the week's reading based upon the "To Think About" questions at the end of each chapter. Your responses should be thoughtful, incisive, and based upon the discussion of the chapter.
(10 points each week for a total of 40 points)
4. Research final.
Students will write a research final about one of the major issues discussed in class using the APA (fifth edition) format. The paper will include a minimum of 5 academic journal articles on the selected topic and should be no more than 5 pages. Students will choose an issue or problem that concerns MCE such as the "heroes and holidays" approach and combine background information and history with some research on the issue and what solutions have been tried. Add a personal addendum with your opinion / reaction regarding the issue.
