Chapter 1.
Brittney's group.
Summary
Our group's Discussion Director made an outline of some topics that she felt would be good to discuss in our meeting today. We talked about what we remembered as young children; few of our group members remembered more than 3 events that happened to them when they were younger than 5. We also talked about if we would really go back to being a young child if we had the opportunity to, and we looked at the Pro's and Con's of both stages of life (talking about being young and the present). Another issue we discussed was how we felt on the topic if children really do things wrong. Then we went over each person's findings for their assigned duty.

Q) What is the primary communication system for humans?
A) Spoken Language
Facts
A child has to learn that communication is happening through speech.
Being a "child" is the first stage of human life.
Language learning occurs in a human-centered, biological world, a world of interacting talking bodies.
Layers of conversation and the study of the layer:
sounds - phonetics, phonology;
meanings - semantics;
sentences/utterances - syntax; and
speech action, sequences - pragmatics.

Important Facts:
— Children play with sounds and words, putting them together to recreate events of the day. They seem to create because the act of creation is a delightful experience.
— Language learning occurs in a human-centered biological world, a world of interacting talking bodies. Spoken language is a primary communication system for humans.
When you use language you:
- make sounds
- express meanings
- accomplish actions
- structure sentences
- accompany speech with visual displays
— Various aspects of the act of learning to talk must be examined.
As adults, we must remember that we are alumni of children. Look at it like this:
- watching a foreign movie
- playing a tape backwards
- comparing climbing into a chair to climbing into a tree house
Vocabulary:
Vivacity — lively in temper, conduct, or spirit
Eloquence — discourse marked by force and persuasiveness
Prod — to initiate action
Virtuosity — great technical skill
Test Questions:
1. Which of these is NOT a part of using language?
- making sounds
- structuring sentences
- *making up new words
- expressing the meaning and concepts of words
2. What is the goal of the first chapter of your book?
- *look at children's language as a biological event
- consider children's language in terms of its role in the system of interaction
- examine various aspects of the act of learning to talk
- place a child's language in a larger world, the world of thought and learning
3. Sounds are to phonology as meanings are to __________________.

Chapter one tells us that children are not little adults and that they must be looked at and understood by what they are not what they will be. Learning to speak is important because it teaches children how to function in our world. In this chapter they want us to go back and try to remember what being a child was really like. It talks about how we need to think like a child. Children think and act differently than adults because they are different then adults. One important idea in this chapter is that to understand a child's speech we must take the time to listen to children speak. Children are not born "blank" at birth they show evidence of thinking. When they experience things they perceive them differently then an adult would, the example in the book of this is when a child climbs into a chair.
Questions:
- What are the layers of communication? Phonetics, Semantics, Syntax, Pragmatics
- If learning language Happens through physical interaction, How would this explain language delays in abused and neglected children? If language is learned through human-centered, physical interactions it would be safe to assume that a child that is locked away or neglected would not have the proper development of language.
- In this chapter what does the author say children have an overflow supply of? The stuff of life.
- How do children learn best? By play.
- To understand a child's speech what should one do? Listen to children speak.
Facts:
- Child signifies a position in family or stage of life.
- Kids are most interested and learn the most while at play.
- Children routinely succeed in learning to speak long before school age.
- A child's speaking is artistic, educational, and rhetorical persuasive.
