The McMenu: A Review and Overview

Wednesday, March 6, 2012
Updated on Thursday, April 12, 2012

The Mulicultural McMenu assignment is designed to give interns creative options for exploring the principles of Multicultural Education. The menu choices feature several assignments of varying values: 25, 50, or 100. Students can choose their own pathways to learning by picking a combination of menu choices that total 100. The choices are scaffolded from 25 to 100 points. Menu choices are designed so that students can choose one theme, or mix and match from different themes to experience more variety.

The McMenu is based on the principles of differentiated instruction, a "philosophy of thinking about teachinig and learning and not just a set of strategies" (Theisen, 2007, AFLTA Conference, University of Central Arkansas). Theisen tells us that differentiated instruction offers a variety of teaching methods and materials to engage all learners, recognizing that multiple pathways lead to learning.

Goal: To provide interns with a menu of assignment choices to meet their learning styles, time commitments, and interests.

Directions: Choose any combination of menu choices to equal 100.  Make a list of your choices and the due dates you will submit these to your instructor.  Be sure to choose something you enjoy, so that you will be McLovin' It!

Deadline: Choices and submission dates are due on March 16.

Assessment: Individual assignments will follow the designation of "Target," "Acceptable," or "Unacceptable."

The following nine Project Descriptors pertain to the McMenu choices for the 2012 cohort. Each descriptor can be accessed in a .pdf file. Just click and go.
