Studenten und Studentinnen!
Welcome to your homepage. You will use this site to get weekly information about your class, German 1310. I will post your assignments and discuss what we will study during the class period. Successes and difficulties will be addressed here, and as soon as the stars are aligned, I will post your syllabus here, too.
Erste Woche.
Week One.
We will spend the first week on Schritt Eins so that you can get a sense of what makes German special. You'll notice immediately that all nouns are capitalized, but the personal pronoun I (ich) is not. How odd! You'll see a beautiful letter (ß) and several vowels (ä,ö,ü) with two dots above them.
You'll also observe that there are several words that are similar to English. These words are called cognates and are very helpful to a beginning German language learner.
On Wednesday (Mittwoch, den 14. Januar) we'll go to the Irby Language Lab (Sprachlabor) for orientation. On Friday (Freitag, den 16. January) you'll have your first vocabulary quiz from the list on pages 2-3.
Viel Glück, good luck, your first week of German class.
21-23 Januar.
Der deutsche Verein
trifft am Dienstag.
The German Club will hold its first meeting on Tuesday, January 20, during x-period (1:40-2:30) in Irby 204. We will discuss the spring calendar and other topics. Everyone is invited. Dues are $5.00 per semester. Students who join receive a free homework and quiz pass!
We are going to have a short week with classes only on Wednesday and Friday, so you will need to make sure you take advantage of your CDs and this website for additional help in learning the vocabulary and for preparing your homework. I will be available after the German Club meeting until 3:00 in Irby 204 for anyone who has questions or needs a little extra practice.
