April 2004
Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 13 at 1:40 in Irby 204. We will elect officers for 2004-2005 and make final plans for the trip to Altus on Saturday, April 17.
Don't forget to pay your dues for this semester. These funds help us with miscellaneous expenses such as pizza!
A Little History of the Club.
Liebe Mitgliedschaft,
Club officer and gentlewoman, April Guy, shares a bit about her participation as a third semester member. Thanks, April.
My first visit to the German Club at UCA was sparked
by curiosity. Alas, there was no Bier Garten . . .
but I quickly realized the group provided a fun way to
meet people similarly interested in Germany and the
German language. Some were German language students,
some were German or Swiss students at UCA or Hendrix,
while others were intrigued by the possibility of
learning more about the culture.
The German Club provided opportunities for everyone.
A fascinating journey to the Wiederkehr Village and
Winery introduced us to their 120-year German-Swiss
tradition of winemaking in the Ozarks. Club meetings
and culture events were full of games, German foods,
and comical attempts to respond to any question with
more than „Ja“ or „Nein.“ The Fasching night was a
great way to see Spanish, French, German, and American
traditions for celebrating Mardi Gras mingling
together.
The German Club is a great chance to step beyond a
classroom and actually experience the true essence of
the German language, lifestyle, and culture. Bis dort!

German Club Off to a Great Start.
Eighteen German aficionados made it to the first German Club meeting. Members met several native German speakers: Rosemarie, Monika, Stephanie, Alex, and Peter, and sampled some genuine German Apfelkuchen. Members also decided to hold one evening meeting per month as a German-language only meeting and invite any German speakers in the Conway area to join the group. Plans are in the works to visit a German restaurant in Hot Springs and a winery in Altus.
