Was und wie ist das?
Januar 2004
Studenten und Studentinnen!
I just finished checking your homework, workbook, and vocabulary quizzes. Was für eine Arbeit! The workbook homework was really pretty good, but I want to point out a few common mistakes.
Don't forget to capitalize all the nouns!
Read the directions carefully. In Schritt 2, several students forgot to write the plural form of the nouns. You will ALWAYS do this even if the directions don't say to.
Pay attention to translation. A sweater and a sweatshirt are not the same, nor is a jacket and a coat.
Finally, remember that the article for ALL plural nouns is die.
I've only received one E-mail about the Bonus Point Challenge. Die Zeit vergeht! Time is passing. Give it a go.
Bonus Point Challenge.
I traditionally give students a chance to earn some extra points in the Bonus Point Challenge. Topics can include anything from culture to vocabulary.
There's a deadline, so pay attention to the date and time. Is anyone up for the first Challenge? Send your answers to Frau Bowles at freddieb@uca.edu by Wednesday, January 28, 9:00 a.m., for a chance to earn a few extra points.
Bonus Point Challenge One.
1. Richtig oder Falsch? Nouns that end in -keit are feminine.
2. Richtig oder Falsch? There are two words for Saturday in German.
3. What is the term for words that are related to another language?
4. Give an example of a casual way to say hello in German.
26-30 Januar.
Der deutsche Verein.
The German Club meets on every second and fourth Tuesday of the month during x-period (1:40-2:30) in Irby 204. Today we watched a Muskiclip of a German pop singer and learned some new vocabulary. It's a great opportunity to stretch your skills and get in some extra listening practice. Everyone is invited. Dues are $5.00 per semester. Students who join receive a PPP (Participation Points Pass)!
We're going to have a busy week. Colors, numbers, clothing, weather. The vocabulary increases as you become more familiar with the sounds of German. Speaking of sounds...several students have noticed a difference between the pronunciation of the speakers on the CDs and from mine. Any guesses why? Zum Glück (luckily), your speakers on the CDs are native speakers of German, so there will be some variation in the way that I pronounce something and the way you hear it on the CD. For that reason, I'll add some tips on the Pronunciation page to help you distinguish the more unusual sounds. Another observation...the vocabulary is not translated on the CDs because the focus is on the individual phonemes (sounds) and are not designed for meaning. If you want to know the meaning of the words, you can check the dictionary or ask me in class.
We'll continue with Schritt 3 and add Schritt 4 for Wednesday. On Friday, you'll have the Wortschatzquiz over Schritt 3 and 4, but I'll make it a written quiz since you will have so many new words. We won't start on Schritt 5 until Monday, February 2, so we are already slowing down just a bit. The workbook pages (7-9) are due on Monday, February 2, instead of this Friday. Your first test is tentatively scheduled for next week, too, either on Wednesday or Friday.
